FRITZ WINTER. BAUHAUSMALER

Anhaltische Gemäldegalerie Dessau, Orangerie am Georgium

Fritz Winter (1905–1976) is regarded as one of the most important figures in abstract painting in Germany. To mark the 50th anniversary of his death, Dessau wishes to commemorate the former Bauhaus student. In collaboration with the Anhaltischer Kunstverein, the Gemäldegalerie is staging an exhibition that explores the painter’s time at the Bauhaus and its significance for his later work and, above all, for how he was perceived in the post-war period. In October 1928, the Anhaltische Gemäldegalerie became the very first museum to acquire a painting by the up-and-coming artist, with its purchase of ‘The Blonde Girl’. With around 50 works on display, the exhibition spans the period from Winter’s student years in Dessau to the mid-1950s, when he enjoyed a peak in public attention thanks to his prominent presence at the first documenta in Kassel.
