The „Liegende große Frau“ belongs to the phase of Nay’s work from 1945 to 1948 in which he created the „Hekate“ paintings. Discovering myths, legends and questions about inner origins, Nay processed war experiences and experimented with forms which emerge solely from colour. The „Liegende“ is a symposium of rhythmic movements and colour contrasts, ultimately experienced not through her embodied figuration, but rather the kaleidoscopic decomposition of form that allows the woman’s eyes, drawn so intensely by Nay, to shine.
