The watercolor was executed on September 3, 1931, while Lyonel Feininger was on summer vacation in Deep on the Baltic Sea. It depicts Quimper in Brittany and is made after a nature study from July 5, 1931. In June and July Feininger went to Brittany after he had visited his old friend the sculptor and engraver Theodore Spicer-Simson (1871 – 1959) in Bourron.
