Soleil sur le Village (1980) is a characteristic work from Marc Chagall’s late oeuvre. The gouache brings together key elements of his pictorial universe: the memory of Vitebsk, the loving couple, village life, and the symbolic presence of the sun and celestial bodies. The work exemplifies Chagall’s late visual language, in which personal memory merges with universal symbolism.s.
The vertical composition is clearly structured. In the upper register, a radiant sun containing a crescent moon dominates the scene – a characteristic motif in Chagall’s work, uniting day and night, reality and dream. In the deep blue sky, animals and suggested figures – including a goat or horse – hover between earthly and cosmic spheres.
Below unfolds a village of closely clustered houses with a centrally rising church. Rendered in green and blue tonalities, the setting unmistakably recalls Chagall’s native Vitebsk. The architecture functions less as precise topography than as a landscape of memory, softly contoured and animated by fluid line.
In the foreground, a couple sits upon an oversized rooster, a recurring symbolic animal in Chagall’s oeuvre. The inclined figures express intimacy and unity, while the rooster traditionally signifies vitality and rural tradition. Additional figures, including a musician, animate the scene and reinforce its festive character.
Executed in gouache on paper, the work displays notable luminosity and transparency. Strong yellows and reds contrast with cooler greens and blues, while the characteristic black contour unifies the composition into a cohesive pictorial surface.
As a work from Chagall’s later period, Soleil sur le Village represents a distilled synthesis of his artistic themes and stands as a compelling example of the enduring significance of his late oeuvre within 20th-century art.
