The present “Zwei Mädchen im Wald” (Two girls in the forest) epitomises Otto Mueller’s oeuvre and the impressive demonstration of his portrayals of the nude. Two naked women are shown in a forest, one sitting and the other leaning against a tree trunk. Completely absorbed in his own formal language, Otto Mueller draws the figures in a striking and angular way. Nevertheless, both women appear very gentle in their contours and blend harmoniously into the nature of the forest. The simplicity of Mueller’s motifs is deliberate: no profound metaphors or terminology are needed to describe his work. The subtlety of this drawing creates a delicate narrative in which people and nature are peacefully united.
