In the autumn of 1914, Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky spent several weeks in Switzerland at the Mariahalde country house near Rorschach on Lake Constance. The trip coincided with the opening weeks of the First World War and was to be their last shared stay. Shortly afterwards, Kandinsky returned to Russia, whilst Münter initially emigrated to Scandinavia. The painting depicts the country house, surrounded by a spacious garden. Vibrant colours, bold contours and simplified forms characterise the composition. The painting was created at a turning point in Münter’s life and also marks the end of her time with Kandinsky.
