Fritz Winter

At first glance, a light composition such as this one appears rather unusual for Fritz Winter. The motif “Die Windgräser (der Brautstrauß)” almost levitates on the light colour of the background. With regard to the title, it is quite remarkable that the artist refrained from using any green paint. The application of paint, consisting of yellow, blue, brown, black and white tones laid in impasto, underscores the movement of the wind, which subtly rustles through the grasses and keeps them in motion. The contemplative gentleness of this experience of nature immediately evokes a sense of palpability. The motifs and themes in Winter’s œuvre are eternally recurring, including the interpretation of earth, nature and its phenomenology.
